As many of you know, Martin Buechler has left for the summer, and we are unsure of a return date. Because of this, we have temporarily removed his portfolio to avoid booking confusion. He will be missed, and we hope he has a blast training dogs and experiencing the US!

Rob Beresford is currently out of town bettering himself as an artist, learning, and growing at the Explorer Tattoo Conference, and he will be back in the studio Thursday June 22, 2017.

We will be closed on the 4th of July, and re-open for normal hours on July 5th.

Chris Garcia will be out of the studio July 5-21, and will be back normal hours July 22.

Lastly, Michael Truitt will be returning for a guest spot July 26-29, and we are stoked to have him back! Find a brief portfolio here.

Guest Artist

Today is Mikey Truitt's last day with us until next time! He's been awesome to have in the studio the last four days, and wish him luck on his Vegas adventure in a few days!

Here's a piece he did the other day, and remember to come catch him here til 8pm before he leaves!

Lorin Hay as officially left us indefinitely and headed to Germany.

We wish him the best of luck, and he will be greatly missed! We look forward to seeing you in the near future, Lorin!

Studio Update, brought to you by Alley Bangarang:

Last night we had a first here at Red 5... actually it was just a first...

Before closing, I had to (for the first time ever in 10 years of working in this industry) ask some clients if they lost their fishing lure... Yes, that's right... Someone left a fishing lure in our lobby by the bathroom door.
SO... If any of our awesome clients lost their lucky lure, let me know!

I want to say that I'm really proud to work with the crew we have here at Red 5. Our current staff is full of talent, and lacks the drama. Fun times, and great tattoos. So thanks Carl, Chris, Brett, Lorin, Matt, Stoll, Jason, and Martin. We're lucky to have such a great team here at Red 5, and will be sad to see Lorin leave for Germany!

Lorin will be leaving April 1st for Germany, and hasn't set a date to come back at the moment. Once we know more information we will let you know, but until then make sure you get in with him before he's gone!

Though Jason and Matt won't be in studio this week, MICHAEL TRUITT will be coming in the 3rd through the 6th for a guest spot! Check him out on instagram @rainbow.eagle!

Following the busy weekends, MARTIN BUECHLER will be joining our team full time! Check his instagram as well @martinbuechlertattoos and be sure to give him a warm welcome when you stop by for appointments! Full announcement and portfolio to come.

Just in case you hadn't heard, Lorin Hay will be leaving for Germany April 1st, for all of April. We won't be booking any appointments for him while he's gone pending information on when he'll be back, but we will keep you posted! Get tattooed by him while you can!

As you know, today is Groundhog's Day and Punxsutawney Phil saw no shadow! The weather has already been very Spring-like for us here in Virginia Beach, but Phil says not much longer!

See Phil's prediction from this morning here:

Our studio age limit for tattooing:

Lets start with that fact that it's awesome that people trust us to tattoo their children, of all places. It's appreciated.

Though the law in Virginia says that you can be under 18 with parental consent, the artists here do not tattoo anyone under the age of 18. There are many reasons for this, some personal and some moral, but regardless it's just not something we do here for those reasons, and the fact that we did not get the insurance policy to cover tattooing minors... which will be explained further down.

The way I see it is that when you turn 18 there are a few privileges you get: you can buy cigarettes, Hustler and Playboy magazines, and you can get tattooed. Whichever you choose is up to you, or none of those things, but the point is that you have to be 18 to do those things by yourself for a reason.

Tattoos are a lifelong commitment. It's often used as a form of self expression, which can sometimes be a momentary thing for even people over 18. I've always told anyone under the age of 18 that if you have a tattoo you want, put the artwork somewhere that you have to look at it every single day until you turn 18, or at least a year, and if you don't want to change a single thing then definitely get it done. Chances are something will change, if not the entire thing. Another issue is that people under 18 and freshly 18 usually want to put tattoos in highly visible locations. This is often considered a "job stopper" that most young people don't think about, because they just want to get tattooed. Tattoos are accessories and not necessities, and unfortunately sometimes they can stop you from getting that big job you went to school for and/or wanted so badly.

In the event that you decide to find someone to do the tattoo, a couple of things to remember and look out for:
-Is that artist licensed, and working inside a professional DPOR/health department regulated and licensed studio? You can look up the license of the artist or a business LLC on the DPOR website. They should also be displayed in the immediate view of the public in each studio.
-Does that studio have an insurance policy that covers tattooing under the age of 18? Studios are supposed to be insured, but the policy generally doesn't cover minors unless added on.
-Did you take a chance to thoroughly look through the artists portfolio? We all know tattoos are permanent, but sometimes we get too excited and in the "I don't care who does it" mood... always care... it's your body, make sure you are investing in it wisely.

As always, we are here to answer any questions you have so don't be shy!
